| Advance Sports Sunshine Coast has a long history of supporting sport, particularly youth in sport, in the region since 1968. The first President was Ireland's 1932 Olympic Gold Medallist Bob Tisdall.
The organisation was formed under the Sportsman's Association of Australia - the country's longest known association formed in 1954.
Its awards were then known as the "Lindy" Awards, named after Sir Walter Lindrum to acknowledge local sports stars in country areas. |
| The present committee began in 1989 with the same charter to promote and foster sport in the region.
The annual highlight of the organisation's efforts is the naming of Senior and Junior Sports Stars at a major event, sponsored by significant community-focused business and community leaders.
Previous winners of the Sports Star of the Year Awards include Lisa curry, Pat Rafter, Clint Robinson, Grant Kenny, Keith Poole, Darren Obah, Benny Pike, Kerry Ireland and Kerri Trevor.
The most inspiring aspect is watching our Junior Stars rise into the Senior ranks in their sports and continue to shine - such rising stars include Zane Harrison, Serena Brooke, Richard Moir and Jamie Rogers - all now competing internationally. |

Now affiliated,
our organisation is the only one of its kind in Queensland
and it distributes approx. $50,000 annually to local
athletes, judged by merit-based selection criteria
and location within the region.
Advance Sports Sunshine Coast has no political, religious or other group connections but operates on a charter and is regularly audited.
The organisation raises its own funds via a program of events and the generosity of major sponsors in business and community fields and has established trust funds for athletes in the following categories of competition:
- Olympic
- Commonwealth
- Paralympic
These trust funds accrue over 4-year periods. |
